MARLIN FISHING WARNING

 MARLIN FISHING WARNING

Subject: MARLIN FISHING DURING THE 2009/2010 MARLIN SEASON A LOT OF MARLIN WERE BOATED (MOST OF WHICH WERE LESS THAN 100 KGS) ALONG THE ZULULAND COAST .

THE AUTHORITIES , KZN WILDLIFE (FISHERIES DEPARTMENT) AND I.W.P.A. ARE BOTH WELL AWARE OF THE SITUATION AND ARE VERY CONCERNED THAT THE RECREATIONAL ANGLERS ARE SHOWING VERY LITTLE REGARD FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR BILLFISH RESOURCES AND HAVE , VERBALLY AND IN WRITING , APPROACHED Z.D.S.A.A AND ZULULAND CLUBS TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION.

TO DATE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FORMAL MEETING BUT Z.D.S.A.A. BELIEVE THAT IT WILL BE IN ALL BILLFISH ANGLER’S INTERESTS TO BEGIN A PROCESS OF SELF REGULATION AND NOT WAIT FOR THE AUTHORITIES TO IMPOSE MINIMUM SIZE OR FULL RELEASE RESTRICTIONS ON BILLFISH .

MOST BILLFISHING IS CONDUCTED OFF THE ZULULAND COAST AND COLLECTIVELY ANGLERS HAVE INVESTED HUGE CAPITAL ON BOATS AND TACKLE SUITABLE FOR BILLFISHING .

THIS PRIVILEDGE COULD BE DESTROYED AT THE STROKE OF A PEN IF IRRESPOSIBLE ANGLERS CONTINUE KILLING BILLFISH .

WE PROPOSE A MINIMUM MASS OF 150 KGS FOR BLUE AND BLACK MARLIN AND FULL RELEASE FOR ALL OTHER BILLFISH SPECIES .

PLEASE DO NOT GO THE ROUTE OF THE LONGLINER/COMMERCIAL ARGUMENT, WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THEIR OPERATIONS AND CAN ONLY PROTECT RECREATIONAL BILLFISHING .

THIS NOTICE WILL BE SENT TO ALL S.A.D.S.A.A. AFFILIATED CLUBS AND WE URGE ALL RESPONSIBLE ANGLERS TO TAKE THIS MATTER SERIOUSLY .

THE FUTURE OF BILLFISHING IS IN OUR HANDS!!!!

M.L. VAN ROOYEN VICE CHAIRMAN & ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER Z.D.S.A.A.
